Key Responsibilities
Export Strategy and Market Expansion Develop and execute the Group’s export growth strategy in alignment with business objectives, production capabilities and identified international market opportunities. Prepare annual, quarterly and monthly export plans covering markets, customers, distributors, products, revenue, volumes, margins, shipments and the business development pipeline. Drive aggressive revenue and volume growth in existing markets by improving distributor performance, SKU listings, channel coverage, customer reach and repeat order frequency. Develop and execute market-entry plans for at least two strategically important new markets within the first six months. Evaluate existing and potential markets based on customer demand, competition, regulatory requirements, logistics feasibility, pricing, payment risk and margin potential. Develop country-wise market plans with defined product portfolios, distribution approaches, timelines, ownership and commercial targets while reducing dependency on any single market, distributor or customer. Trading Business Development Establish and develop local and international trading as a scalable and profitable business vertical within Pelwatte Dairy Group. Identify commercially viable products across dairy, food, beverages, ingredients, commodities and related FMCG categories for local trading, import, export and re-export. Evaluate trading opportunities based on customer demand, product availability, pricing, quality requirements, working-capital needs, credit exposure and margin potential. Develop relationships with reliable local and international suppliers, manufacturers, principals, agents, customers and trading partners. Negotiate favourable commercial terms and develop product-wise and transaction-wise profitability models before entering significant trading arrangements. P&L Ownership and Financial Accountability Own the consolidated Export and Trading P&L covering export sales, local trading, international trading and Dubai Free Zone trading operations. Deliver approved revenue, volume, gross margin, contribution margin, profitability and cash-generation targets. Develop and execute the commercial pathway required for the Export and Trading vertical to contribute 15% of Group topline within the first three years. Monitor financial performance by product, customer, distributor, market, supplier and trading transaction. Work with Finance to manage pricing, working capital, customer credit, receivables, debtor days, inventory exposure, supplier terms, cash conversion and foreign-exchange exposure, and prepare accurate monthly P&L reviews and forecasts. Dubai Free Zone Trading Entity Leadership Provide strategic and commercial leadership for the Group’s Dubai Free Zone trading entity and define its product categories, target territories, customer segments, sourcing markets and revenue model. Position Dubai as a regional platform for international sourcing, market access, sales and re-export opportunities across the GCC, Middle East, Africa, South Asia and other commercially attractive regions. Build relationships with regional customers, distributors, suppliers, logistics providers and relevant Free Zone stakeholders. Maintain clear visibility of Dubai-based revenue, costs, margins, receivables, payables, working capital and profitability while coordinating with Finance, Legal, Tax, Compliance, Banking, Logistics and external advisors Distributor Development, Market Segmentation and Distributor P&L Growth Develop and maintain distributor-wise business plans and P&L visibility covering revenue, volumes, gross margin, contribution margin, debtor position, repeat orders, market expenditure and profitability. Drive the growth of existing distributors by increasing product listings, SKU range, monthly order frequency, channel reach, outlet coverage and active customer numbers. Conduct country-wise market and channel segmentation across modern trade, general trade, wholesale, HoReCa, institutional customers, ethnic stores, online channels, B2B food service, importers and re-export traders. Establish distributor-specific commercial targets by product category, channel, territory, customer segment and reporting period. Identify gaps in existing distributor coverage and recommend additional distributors, territory restructuring or alternative channel arrangements where required. Negotiate distributor agreements and review performance through structured scorecards, initiating corrective action, additional support, restructuring or replacement where necessary. 6. New Distributor Identification and Market Entry Execution Build and maintain a target distributor pipeline by country, product category, channel and customer segment for existing and new markets. Identify distributors with immediate access to priority channels and the operational capacity to launch products within a short timeframe. Conduct distributor capability assessments covering financial strength, market coverage, sales capacity, customer base, category experience, regulatory knowledge, warehousing, logistics, reputation and speed to market. Complete financial, operational, compliance and reference evaluations before recommending the appointment of a new distributor. Develop distributor onboarding and launch plans covering product registration, pricing, shipment planning, retailer listings, channel activation, marketing support and the first 90-day sales plan. Monitor the progress of newly appointed distributors through scorecards covering first commercial order, repeat orders, revenue, volume, collections, SKU penetration, market coverage and profitability. Supplier and Third-Party Manufacturing Development Identify and develop reliable local and international suppliers for dairy, food, beverages, ingredients, commodities, packaging and other trading products. Identify third-party manufacturing and co-manufacturing vendors locally and globally to support market-specific export requirements. Identify third-party manufacturing and co-manufacturing partners capable of supporting export, trading and market-specific product requirements. Evaluate suppliers and 3P manufacturing partners based on quality, food safety, certifications, capacity, cost competitiveness, lead time, reliability, regulatory suitability, financial stability and scalability. Coordinate due diligence and negotiate supplier and manufacturing agreements in collaboration with Quality Assurance, Legal, Finance, Procurement, R&D and Supply Chain. Develop alternative suppliers and manufacturing options to reduce dependency, improve margins and protect continuity of supply. Negotiate supplier agreements, manufacturing agreements, pricing, minimum order quantities, payment terms, lead times, quality specifications, exclusivity rights and supply continuity terms. Regulatory Compliance and Documentation Ensure that export, import, re-export, local trading, international trading and Dubai Free Zone operations comply with applicable laws, regulations and internal governance requirements. Coordinate product registrations, health certificates, certificates of origin, import and export permits, customs documents, labelling approvals and destination-market documentation. Ensure products comply with applicable food safety, quality, packaging, labelling, shelf-life and country-specific regulatory requirements. Work with Legal and Compliance teams to manage distributor, supplier, agency, customer and trading agreements while maintaining accurate and complete commercial and regulatory records. Establish effective controls to minimise shipment delays, customs holds, documentation errors, regulatory rejections and customer claims. Logistics and Supply Chain Coordination Coordinate export and trading fulfilment with Production, Procurement, Warehousing, Quality Assurance, freight forwarders, clearing agents and logistics partners. Plan shipments according to customer requirements, production availability, inventory levels, product shelf life, regulatory requirements and agreed delivery timelines. Manage Incoterms, freight options, shipping schedules, documentation flows, shipment tracking and logistics arrangements for exports, imports, re-exports and trading transactions. Ensure cold-chain, product-handling, food-safety, storage and transportation requirements are maintained where applicable. Resolve production, supply, documentation, freight, clearance or delivery issues that could affect customer fulfilment or profitability. Brand Development and International Market Presence Build Pelwatte Dairy Group’s international presence through professional distributor management, customer engagement, trade development and consistent product availability. Work with Marketing to develop export catalogues, product decks, digital sales materials, country-specific presentations and channel activation plans. Represent Pelwatte Dairy Group at relevant international exhibitions, trade missions, buyer meetings, business forums and B2B events. Develop long-term relationships with international customers, distributors, trade bodies, chambers, embassies and other market-development stakeholders while ensuring professional representation of the Pelwatte brand. Team Leadership, Governance and Reporting Establish the appropriate team structure, operating procedures, individual accountabilities and performance measures for the Export and Trading function. Lead, coach and develop team members to strengthen export sales, market development, trading, documentation, customer service and compliance capabilities. Establish disciplined review mechanisms covering sales pipelines, distributor performance, trading transactions, margins, collections, shipments, compliance and commercial risks. Provide timely and accurate reports, recommendations and market insights to the Managing Director to support strategic and commercial decision-making. Collaborate with Finance, Legal, Quality Assurance, Production, Supply Chain, Procurement, Marketing, R&D and Strategic Planning while maintaining high standards of integrity, accountability, governance and commercial discipline. Qualifications, Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Business, International Trade, Marketing, Supply Chain, Food Science, Finance or a related field. MBA or postgraduate qualification will be an added advantage. Minimum 10 years of experience in exports, international business, trading, FMCG, food and beverage, dairy, commodities or related sectors. Minimum 5 years in a senior commercial leadership role handling exports, distributors, international markets or trading portfolios. Proven experience in opening new markets, building distributors and scaling international business. Experience in food and beverage exports, dairy products, FMCG trading, commodity trading, import/export or re-export operations preferred. Experience with Free Zone trading operations, particularly Dubai, UAE or GCC trade structures, will be a strong advantage.
